Benefits of Cedar Cat Houses
Why we choose to use cedar: Natural Resistance to Insects, Moisture, and Decay Cedar's natural resistance to insect damage, moisture, and decay make it the ideal choice for a surface that is exposed to the elements all year round. Cedar fibres contain natural oils which act as environmentally-friendly preservatives, preventing damage due to moisture and fungi that would quickly cause lesser woods to rot and decay when subjected to an outdoor environment. These natural preservatives also resist insect damage and infestation due to fleas, ticks, carpenter ants, and termites. Due to this, cedar, unlike most other types of wood, does not need to be treated with harmful synthetic chemicals to ensure long-lasting performance when exposed to a harsh environment (rain, heat, cold, humidity, dirt, insects, etc.). Western red cedar does not require painting, although if untreated it will slowly turn grey with age if left outdoors. If you would prefer to preserve the rich original color of your cedar cat house, simply spray or paint the exterior with Thompson's Brand Wood Protector. Exceptional Thermal Insulation Values Cedar has superior insulation and acoustical properties. Cedar cat houses will stay cool to the touch in the summer heat and hold in valuable warmth in the winter months to help keep your pet comfortable and safe. The insulation properties of cedar also help absorb noises that may disturb your pet - many cats do not feel comfortable in a plastic cat house not only because they act as a very poor insulator from the heat and cold, but because of the unnatural noises that echo inside them when the cat moves around. Even the distortion and amplification of noises from outside a plastic home will often disturb your pet. Unlike plastic cathouses, our cedar wood cat houses are significantly cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter Strength and Durability Western red cedar has roughly twice the dimentional stability of most softwoods. It has the strength characteristics of more expensive hardwoods, yet it is lighter, easier to work, contains natural preservatives, and has better weather resistance. Cedar has low density and shrinkage factors and an excellent strength to weight ratio. Western red cedar has a straight fine grain with a uniform texture making it easy to cut, saw, nail, and screw with common tools. The absence of pitch and resin allows Western red cedar to accepts a wide range of solid and semi-transparent finishes. |
